I forgot to mention in the Classroom News that there will be no Word Study this week due to the short week. This should be reflected on the homework calendar, but just an FYI!
Please note that I will send out the email referenced in this post at the end of the school day on Friday, November 20. Thank you!
Reading - We wrapped up our Home unit on theme with students applying what they learned in a new context - for example, designing a room for a book character and describing it using the styles of the authors we'd already read. We began our next unit: realistic fiction! This unit will focus on story structure and character analysis. Writing - Thank you to those who were able to make it to our Writers' Celebration! Students did an on-demand prompt today as a way to assess their growth throughout the unit (they completed the same prompt before we did the unit). Even just walking around and glancing over shoulders I could see growth in output, paragraphing, and topic choice. I can't wait to read them! We're also off to a great start with our new unit on informational writing. Math - We began our next unit in multiplication by brainstorming things that come in groups. Students can be on the lookout for things that come in equal groups (wheels on a bike, etc.) and use our Instagram hashtag to share! Science - Students began investigating magnets and how they interact with other magnets and paper clips. I was impressed with their creative questions, and saw many students get off to a great start with writing about their scientific observations. We're also working on using materials responsibly, and got off to a good start this way. Miscellaneous - Please see my email with instructions on how to schedule a conference for the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences. I am looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child's progress in third grade! Please let me know if you have any issues with signing up electronically. We have a full day Monday, our usual early release at 1:00PM on Tuesday, AND an early release at 12:00PM on Wednesday. No school Thursday or Friday because of Thanksgiving - have a happy and safe holiday! Reading - We wrapped up our study of Home with a look at author's purpose. This is a great talking point for any book! Next week, we'll assess students' understanding of theme and how they can apply their learning about the theme of home to a new text.
Writing - We've been publishing away with the hopes of sharing our hard work with you next Wednesday at 1:45! Please check with your child if they brought home any part of their final draft, front cover, or extra (optional) book features, like a back cover. Anything for their final product should come back Monday. Next week, we'll celebrate, and look forward to our next unit: information writing. News of this unit generated a lot of excitement! Math - Students tried out some new subtraction strategies, such as place value and creating an equivalent problem. We'll wrap up our work with addition and subtraction next week. Social Studies - We finished up our Wampanoag unit as well! Next is Science: Motion and Matter! Miscellaneous - As always, feel free to email me with any questions or concerns!
Reading - This week, we studied symbols and how different items in a book might represent something else, in this case, home. I was really impressed with students' ability to figure out what different symbols represented!
Please note that November's reading response project went home earlier this week: Theme In a Bottle! I would appreciate getting back the "permission slips" at the bottom of the first page of the assignment. I would love to know what books students plan on using. Writing - Students finished revising and began editing their writing. They'll continue on to make final drafts of their pieces. We'd like to invite you in to celebrate students' writing on November 18 at 1:45! I will plan on varying the time and week day of future Writers' Celebrations as much as possible, though they are generally at the very beginning or end of our school day. Math - Students continued working on strategies to find the difference between two numbers. We focused on adding up (30 + ? = 45) and keeping one number whole (45 - ? = 30). We'll continue working on subtraction next week; we'll begin developing understanding of the strategies' names as well as other strategies. Social Studies - We finished our friezes! Many thanks to the volunteers who donated supplies and/or time to make this project possible. If you follow us on Instagram, stay tuned to see one of the friezes.... hopefully shortly after I successfully hang them! We'll visit Plimoth Plantation this Monday. Please help your child select weather-appropriate clothes and comfortable shoes. It's an outdoor museum. Your student should also bring a nut-free snack and lunch, as well as a drink. No glass, please. I recommend a heartier snack than usual as we'll be walking around all morning and eating slightly later than we normally do. Miscellaneous - As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns! |
